About / Bio
ALBERTO KURAPEL

He was born in 1946 in Santiago, Chile.  In 1968, he received his degree from the University of Chile in theatre.  After his outstanding  interpretation in the title role of «Victor ou les enfants du pouvoir» of Roger Vitrac, he was hired by the University of Chile Theatre Institute.  From then, he has been seen performing not only as comedian but also as an actor, on the radio and television.  After the Coup d'État took place in Chile in 1973, he left his country and came to Montreal, Canada.

In 1981, he founded La Compagnie des Arts Exilio in Montreal, a Latino-American Performance-Theatre: Theatre of exile, theatre of memory and of the dissatisfaction.

Breaking the cultural barriers, his works are distinctive by their lucidity, clear sighted, humanism and their quest for freedom and justice in the art and life.

Its plays are raised ardent polemics in Europe, United States as well as in Latin America. Six of his staged plays have been published by the Editorial Humanitas/nouvelle optique .

"...Kurapel's performances exhibit the most radical form of renovation within Latin American theatre and are a powerful and original expression the tradition of performance in general, achieving a special union of interculturality and the use of diverse codes, which never just settle for effect for the sake of effect at the level of the signifier, but which produce a signifier whose signified can be deduced by the spectator by means of the various intertexts presented.  Kurapel's performances take carnivalization to its ultimate limits, and almost to its dissolution."
(Professor Alfonso de Toro. University of Kiel.)

"...Even though the inspiration is exile and the vehicle is memory, which enable Alberto Kurapel to transcend time and space and so deal with the universal problems of the human condition"
Johm Walker. C.T.R. 56. Fall 1988)

His poetry books has been included in many anthology, including «Anthologie de Nunzio Menna»(Italy 1976) and Jean Royer's «Introduction à la Poésie Québécoise» (Quebec 1989). In 1976, he received the special award «F. de Santis per la poesia», in Italy.  In the same year he received the «Gold Medal» at the International Contest «Verso Il Futuro», Avellino.

He recorded eight long-playings record in Canada.  His last record Confidential\Urgent, recorded in 1989.  And for the first time the Quebec poetry has been translated and sang by a Latino-American Artist.  Melodies and sounds from the womb of Andes music, mixed to contemporary North-American sounds.  Those texts are the core of its performance «Carta de Ajuste ou Nous n'avons plus besoin de calendrier».

Never-failing Mr Kurapel regalarly gives conferences, write articles, participate to Panels in Montreal, Paris, New York, Cordoba, Caracas, Washington etc.   He also translates in spanish, Quebec authors.  He is invited  to «La Nuit de la Poésie 1991», held in Montreal.

Some comments about Alberto Kurapel le Guanaco gaucho

"Breaking cultural barriers, his works are noted for their strikking imagistic performances and their deep commitment to freedom and justice in art and life"
(Alan Filewood, Editor, Canadian Theatre Review 79/80, 1994)

"Kurapel's rejection to play "by the rules" and instead to submerge himself, and with him the audience, into the surreal world, makes a good summary of this political dimension where theatre and reality reach their off-limits centre of gravity, and where-like in a dream-impossible things seem now possible"
(Sergio Martinez, Vice Versa no 20)

"Although it owes something to Brecht and Pirandello, 3 Performances Téatrales is original, alternative Latin American theatre, written an produced in Canada.  [...] This a a rare anthology of Latin America theatre born and rooted in Canadian actuality (...) even though the inspiration is exile and the vehicle is memory, which enable Alberto Kurapel to transcend time and space and so deal with the universal problems of the human condition.
(John Walker, Canadian Theatre Review 56, Fall 1988)

"(...) Exile is an ache that brings both joy and sorrow, the pain of loss and the hope of return.  Alberto Kurapel has chosen an American style.  He has decided to make a spectacle of his sorrow.  And we are touched to the heart.  (...) I was moved by the pathetic face of this man with the tender and feverish look of the poet."
(Viva Virus, October 1983)

"...Nous sommes non seulement devant un dramaturge intelligent mais aussi face à un excellent acteur et créateur, qui sait ce qu'il cherche et qui est disposé à se risquer dans cette recherche [...]  Et pour cela Kurapel continuera à payer sa faute de faire un théâtre excellent et innovateur.."
(Fernando de Toro. Ottawa.  Canada. 1989)

"A. Kurapel's Performances are, (...) a most impressive example of postmodern expression, because of their sheer authenticity, imagination, vigour and artistic elaboration. [...].  Kurapel's performance exhibit the most radical form of renovation within Latin American theatre and  are a powerful and original expression within the tradition of performance in general, achieving a special union of interculturality and the use of diverse codes, which never just settle for effect to the sake of effect at the level of the signifier, but which produce a signifier whose signified can be deduced by the spectator by means of the various intertexts presented.  Kurapel's performances take carnivalization to the ultimate limits, and almost to its dissolution. "
(Alfonso de Toro,  Kiel. Allemagne.  1991)

hi Alberto!
i'm glad you found the site! thanks for considering using it.
i recently noticed that you posted some non-score-files as if they were scores (the purpose of the site). at this point you're welcome to do this - i'm not going to take them down - but i thought i should give you fair warning that at some point in the near future, i may make a festival or event out of non-score material currently posted to the site (don't worry - you're not the only one : ) - please read the following from the FAQ, and then proceed as you wish:

from: http://uploaddownloadperform.net/UDP/FAQ#resumeAsScore

if that's not what you desire, i would recommend putting the links to these files on AlbertoKurapel/Index instead of on separate pages.

just fyi. not a threat, just a notification : )
wishing you the best,
adam

(ps - feel free to delete this post from your page once you've read it)

hi Alberto
just a heads up that i've now moved your two files to your 'About' section - since they are not scores, they should be included there, instead of on score pages.

also - please create a password!
best,
adam
